Dave, both of these incidents are a threat assessor's worst nightmare. Because they point out the inherent dangers in a mostly free society. We don't control or check people as they move about the US in their cars. Sure, we "check" ID, but people for years have resisted a formal, federal tamper proof ID, like a passport, for every US citizen.
So what can we do?
I'd love to sit in a forum with serious people and think on this, but the blogging class isn't it because most people here already know it all and hate serious questions.
Is what happened an omen? I think it is. But of a much larger problem, a much larger issue.

Just don't suggest that religious fundamentalism, Bush's war based on lies about non-existent bio/chemical/"nukular" WMD programs, and non-existent al-Qaeda/Saddam ties, in addition to the US taking sides in ancient desert tribal conflicts could possibly lead to this problem.
