Otherwise,
as Rep. Adam Kinzinger told CNN: “If he is not guilty of a crime,
then I frankly fear for the future of this country, because now every future
president can say, ‘Hey, here’s the bar.’ And the bar is do everything you can
to stay in power... As we’ve gotten into this, I look, and I’m like, yeah, if
this is not a crime, I don’t know what is. If a president can incite
an insurrection and not be held accountable, then really, there’s no limit to
what a president can do, or can’t do.”

And through it all Trump has not been convicted of a crime yet.
Anonymous. That's right. In our legal system there's a process of evidence gathering, indictment, trial, and then conviction. Evidence has been gathered. Indictment, trial, and conviction will follow.
If Trump loves our country he will order his cult to stand down if he is indicted. But he won't. He would be happy to tear our country apart if he doesn't get his way.
We all know he loves only himself. ALL the evidence tells us this.
And if he is not indicted then he committed no crimes.

So you believe that if nobody is charged for an unsolved murder, nobody committed a crime.
You keep lowering your IQ with every comment.
Howdy Dave!
2023 is going to be a big big year. The biggest. Everybody is saying so. Believe. It's going to be beautiful. It's hard to believe that 6 January indictments are not coming down the pike. I don't know whether Trump will be indicted, but someone from that inner circle sure needs to be because someone from that inner circle is going to cover their own ass and turn on everyone else. That's a good bet right there. No one likes to take a chance unless faced with a sure loss. And, brother, there sure are some losers in Trump world.
Huzzah!
Jack
Jack,
It's terrifying to consider the repercussions of the Big MAGAt getting away with his crimes. We won't be able to even pretend to be nation of laws anymore.
I share your hope that his lieutenants flip on him, but it really shouldn't be necessary. Trump's criminal intent was crystal clear by his Big Lie, strong-arming for Georgia votes, fake electors, incitement of an armed mob, and refusal to stop their attack on the Capitol.
And if his words "Mike Pence didn't have the courage...I know you're hurt...We had an election that was stolen... You're very special. We love you" and "Remember this day forever" don't clinch it, nothing will.
I predict he will be indicted, but will get a sweetheart plea deal conditioned on him not running for public office again, with a fine that he would have his cult pay for him. Maybe a couple months of house arrest at MAL.
I'm also sure he won't be indicted for all his crimes.
I certainly don't expect justice to be served or any serious accountability. I really do hope my cynicism will be unfounded.
Regardless, the new House will give us fresh new nightmares of a disintegrating republic in chaos.
It's only safe to say the crazed white nationalism is strong and we won't be bored.
USA! USA!
Nixon got away with his crimes and democracy and the United States went on. Many politicians got away with crimes, yet we still carry on. Some of those crimes were MUCH worse than what Trump has done.
Yes, we have a history of presidents committing crimes against humanity, especially those inflicted on Native Americans. They violated treaties and massacred innocent human beings. LBJ and Nixon left a bloody legacy in SE Asia.
Pardoning Nixon was Ford's mistake. It did nothing to put an end to Nixon's, and now Trump's, lie, "If the president does it, it's not illegal".
I would allow Bush's war based on lies as the only modern comparison, but that didn't destabilize our elections, corrupt our democracy, and end our history of peaceful transfer of power.
Trump essentially triggered a cold second civil war and we've yet to see all the consequences. No president has caused anywhere near that level of destruction to our constitutional representative democracy.
For that, his crimes set him apart from the rest. If he's not held accountable, the rule of law and our republic are essentially finished.
Whether he is held accountable or not, it will not be the end of America, or democracy in America.
Anonymous,
The question is what kind of America would it be when equal justice under law is so subverted a former president is free to commit crimes at will.
It would no longer be a nation of laws. Is that still a democratic republic?
American "democracy" is so unrepresentative and tenuous as it is.
How long before our democratic republic is as hollow as North Korea's "Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea"?
"Kim Jong Don" would love to be a dictator.
