Who Are They?

Who Are They?

Who are they, who we hear say?

“Liberal Media! Fake news! The press is the enemy of the people!”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“Imprison the opposition! Lock her up!”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“Global warming is a hoax! Corporations are people.”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“We don’t want everybody to vote.”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“Screw the poor! Tax cuts for the rich!”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“You have no right to public education and healthcare!”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“We have the pandemic under control!”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

“It’s the common cold, maybe the flu.”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are they, who we hear say?

I don’t take responsibility. Make America great again.”

Enemies of Democracy, Enemies of Equality

Who are They?...Who Are They?...

By ‘they”, I read “him”. But I understand that the pixies who whisper in his ear invariably induce him to claim such thoughts are original ideas. To some extent we are all guilty of plagiarism of ideas. But we rarely take credit for the ideas of others to the extent this administration currently does. There remains a question about his capacity for such original thought. He espouses the ideas of others as being his own. It’s not uncommon these days. But philosophical consistency is difficult unless it is well considered. Not with this guy. He and his Pixies must be the plural about whom you speak. Only selective consistency can be found. When he goes offtrack he frequently makes the news. He seems to believe it’s unfair. Makes him crabby.

Anonymous,
Yes, most of those remarks have been spoken by you-know-who. “We don’t want everybody to vote” is the Republican Party's first open statement of their opposition to democracy. It was from Reagan advisor Paul Weyrich.

Since you-know-who's party and supporters are a cult in every way, "they" are are also the proponents of their leader's cult dogma. Authoritarians followers are fanatically united in their loyalty to their authoritarian leaders. That cohesion explains how they have taken power, and established minority rule.

As Yeats said, "The best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate intensity."

Many of the rest of us are finding some of that passionate intensity, but will enough of us do so before it is too late?
