The View From The Bottom

Lately Mrs. Dubya and I have been recording the View to watch later in the evening. There are often spirited and heated exchanges during the Hot Topics portion of the show when the ladies start talking politics.

As most of you know, John McCain was a guest on the program on September 12th. He didn’t expect to get the toughest questioning he’s ever seen, before or since, on a national TV broadcast. To the disgrace and shame of our nation’s TV “journalists”, Meet the Press, CNN and the rest were softball picnics in comparison.

After McCain talked about rolling back Supreme Court decisions, Whoopi Goldberg asked him if he wanted to return to the days of slavery. Barbara Walters checked him when he crowed about Palin not talking pork-barrel earmarks.

The best part came when Joy Behar brought up the McCain ads accusing Obama of wanting to teach sex education to kindergartners and referring to Palin with his lipstick on a pig comment. “Now we know that those two ads are untrue, they are lies. And yet, you at the end of it say you approve these messages. Do you really approve these?"

McCain responded with another lie, of course. “Actually they are not lies.” Come on, Johnny. Everyone not sucked into the Fox News propaganda network knows they were lies.

For too long now the news media has been self-censoring itself to the point where they will repeat the right wing lies without challenge or fact check. The women on the View demonstrated great courage to refuse the usual corporate media lapdog role. Whoopi, Joy and Babs gave Americans their best view of the real McCain. They all deserve the Medal of Freedom for telling the liar to his face he's a liar. No wonder Larry King likes to have Joy substitute for him on his show.

But, wait. Isn’t there a loyal Republican cast member of the View? What about Elisabeth Hasselbeck? Her views are so far to the right that there are constant rumors about her taking a job at Fox. You gotta give her credit for chattering the Republican Party talking points at the other women. She feels she needs to talk as much as all the rest combined, just to assert the Right Wing lies. It may not take brains to lie about Obama wanting to raise everyone’s taxes, but it does take determination to spew the disinformation at such high decibels over the other’s voices. The poor girl has to constantly interrupt everyone just to keep on her message that Obama pals around with terrorists. Bless her cold, authoritarian, little heart.

I bring all this up because Ms. Hasselbeck has inspired one of her fans to launch their own viral email forwarded message. It was just my luck to finally receive her devoted follower’s passionate communication about how proud they were to be white. The title of the message was “PROUD TO BE WHITE - IT'S OK”.

Well, since it was “OK”, I thought I’d go ahead and read it.

And you know what? I didn’t think it was OK at all. So I responded to the sender and all the other recipients of this crap with an introduction of my own.

Be sure to scroll to the end for the part that’s really OK.

I don’t need to share it all with you, but here’s some of it so you get the idea. And I added my comment at the end.

On the heels of the discussion on The View this last week:

PROUD TO BE WHITE

Someone finally said it.
How many are actually paying attention to this?

There are African Americans,
Mexican Americans,
Asian Americans, Arab Americans,
Native Americans, etc.
.....And then there are just -
Americans..

You pass me on the street
and sneer in my direction.
You Call me ‘White boy,’
‘Cracker,’ ‘Honkey,’
‘Whitey,’ ‘Caveman,’
.....And that’s OK.
But when I call you Nigger,
Kike, Towel head,
Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey,
Beaner, Gook, or Chink,
.....You call me a racist.

If we had a White Pride Day
.....You would call us racists.

If we had White History Month
.....We’d be racists.
If we had any organization for only whites
to ‘advance’ OUR lives,
.....We’d be racists.

In the Million-Man March,
you believed that you were
marching for your race and rights.
If we marched for our race and rights,
.....You would call us racists.

You are proud to be black,
brown, yellow and red,
and you’re not afraid to announce it.
But when we announce our white pride
.....You call us racists. .

I am proud.
.....But, you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

There is nothing improper about this e-mail.
Let’s see which of you are proud enough to send it on...

And if you’re proud to pass this along, you ARE a racist and probably a Republican.

And you think Joe the Plumber is a real licensed plumber making over $250,000 a year. Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, the Republican apprentice plumber, (If he’s a plumber at all) is a liar and swindler looking for fools to give him their money. He might be taking YOUR MONEY soon, for his new dumbass book or country music CD. Small minded, uninformed people with big egos are common authoritarian personalities in the American far right. Joe shares these same characteristics with his beloved Bush and Palin.

And one more thing. Please do (sorta) what the proud, white, democracy-hating Americans say in their flyers down south:

Democrats vote Tuesday. Republicans vote Wednesday.

I was deeply involved in the civil rights movement for approximately twenty years. Here are just a few memories of some of the marches. My involvement began in 1967, the year of the Detroit Riots that threatened to destroy that city. The city I lived in at the time, Saginaw Michigan, had a large black population. That city teetered on a knife's edge between order, and turning into complete chaos. Against that background, I began my civil rights career.

"And if you’re proud to pass this along, you ARE a racist and probably a Republican"
You make quite the generalization there, and elsewhere!:) But I agree, there's no need for white pride month or anything else. Nor is there for Black pride month, I might add.

In the late sixties and all of the seventies, I heard very little, if any, of "proud to be Black" reasons they were demonstrating, and a LOT about human dignity, and equal rights. Not Black rights. "EQUAL rights!"! The people I worked with understood all rights had to be colorless, or they were doomed to failure. The Black marches and demonstrations back then weren't a mail in campaign, a "answer a national telephone poll," they were a "get ready to take stones and rotten fruit to the body: we're marching!" affair.

In later years, both sides got lazy. The white people invented Political Correctness to cover their failures; blacks soon learned PCness was the perfect vehicle to get anything they wanted - just scream racism. Political Correctness also invented the Black Racist, only nobody wants to admit that. To do so, would mean admitting they've both been F'ing off on racism when they should have been working towards equal rights.

Political Correctness also set the black person back in the fifties and sixties in terms of equal rights. Instead of equal rights, they get lip service that looks like equal rights. The current generation of Blacks are more than content to accept that lip service as long as they personally get what they want.

"Why is it that only whites can be racists?
"

A lot of people would like an answer to that question - a LOT! They would even settle for a publically acclaimed and acknowledged black racist, in the David Duke manner. I can give you two with a long track record of racism in a flash. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. But both are treated as if they were flawless.

"Pigmentation" Rights are forever doomed to failure.

"Please do (sorta) what the proud, white, democracy-hating Americans say in their flyers down south:"

ROTFLMAO!!!!! You have enough blanket generalizations to put out a forest fire!:) I'm a Proud, White, Democracy LOVING Southerner.... I won't bore you with the old one of "them" is my best friend, but our wives constantly complain about our fishing trips. We never take more than three a week, either!!

Throw away the Kool Aid. You've been lied to badly by those you should be able to trust.

Dan’l,

You keep me honest, seeing my weakness for generalizations! There are just so many good ones. "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public," being a particular favorite.

Just as I love a good generalization, I also can’t stand intolerance, I despise hatred, and I’m not sure about ambiguity.

I am also prejudiced against racism.

How does that Ave. Q song go? Everyone's a little bit racist. Humans seem to have an inborn distrust of others with physical, geographical, religious or cultural differences. Alas, try as I may, I can’t shake all the bias out of me. Although some of my best friends are Southern whites or Republican voters. ;-)

I have a problem with the whole pride thing. Is it a sin, or is it a virtue? It seems to me it should be something you feel in regard of others. I’m proud of a lot of people, but I don’t strut on about being proud of myself. I have enough difficulty with an inflated ego issue; pride would push me over the edge.

To me, pride is like honor. You can claim honor, but it has to be awarded to you for it to have value.

I learned my first racial wisdom from my great-grandfather. He was a lumberjack in the Great North Woods who married an Ottawa woman. He would say, “You can’t trust them Indians”. Then he would add, “You can’t trust those white people either”.

What would Hasselbeck do without talking points? What would Palin do without talking points? What would Shrub do without talking points?

aWol has talking points??? Who read them to him??

I have met and sometimes worked with racists of all colors. And at times I have been quilty of racist remarks, but hopefully as I aged, I got wiser!!

As for the race riots in Detroit, I know people who were in the Guard at the time and were sent to Detroit and given rifles with no ammo!! Talk about a scary situation!!

i am fairly judgmental and i definitely have blinders on when it comes to rethuglicans. it has only been in the last 2 years that i realized that the left wing can be just as ignorant as the right. having said that- i can honestly say that dan'l always calls me on my shit- and i hope that he always does because i need it too :) that doesn't mean that i still won't overgeneralize and be prejudiced against the right wing- because i am just not interested in giving them any ground at this particular time. perhaps in a year or two :)

Libhom,

The Right is more like Hollywood than they can imagine. They need to always stick to the script. They ACT like they love America, while they really hate half the people.

Kulkuri,

We old geezers can always be reverse agists if the youth vote fails to emerge this electon. We may have to let 'em have it.

Betmo,

Generally speaking, you're right. Our generalizations are far more grounded in reality than the Right's are.
